Full Circle is a permanent installation inspired by the unique ecology of the Western Pacific coast. Carved from a single redwood tree felled in an urban backyard, the installation celebrates that original tree which, as a form of propagation, sends baby trees up from around its base creating a new ring of growth. Charred black and coated with wax in a traditional wood preservation technique called shou sugi ban, the project also commemorates recent forest fires that have blackened the landscape. Full Circle recognizes the fullness in a diversity of humans, forms, perspectives, and approaches. The undulating form is meant as a playful gesture, inviting unexpected ways of relating to the human body. Together, the title and the form suggest an alternative to the platonic form of the circle—the form is only complete by what is hidden below the surface.
